How To Hand Sew A Button Loop

This is the kind of care and finesse that draws me to vintage sewing.

To create a hand-sewn button loop:

1. Anchor your thread on the inside of the fabric, then enter back in with enough loose thread to hook around your button on the opposite side. Repeat two more times, keeping loops evenly sized.

2. Use a tight blanket stitch to cover the length of thread loop you've just made (as pictured). This reinforces the loop and binds the three threads into one strong loop.

I love how this technique looks braided or tatted and at the same time is discreet, not adding extra bulk like a fabric loop might.
